For most of the smartphone era, longevity was beside the point. Devices became obsolete before they broke, and the upgrade cycle did the work that durability never had to. That calculus has shifted. Consumers now expect their phones to last, yet the industry has quietly moved in the opposite direction, sealing devices with adhesive, miniaturising screws beyond practical reach, and making glass-and-aluminium sandwiches that shatter elegantly but repair expensively. Into this contradiction steps Fairphone, a Dutch manufacturer that has just entered the United States market with a device built on a genuinely different premise.
The Fairphone Gen 6+, priced at $650, is designed from the ground up for longevity and user-led repairability. It is not a niche curiosity. It is a direct challenge to the assumption that a premium smartphone must be a sealed, glued, and essentially disposable object.
What Repairability Actually Means in Practice
The standard critique of modern flagship phones is not that they break more often than older devices, but that when they do break, the repair path is either prohibitively expensive or practically unavailable. Google, Samsung, and Apple have all extended software support timelines to somewhere near a decade, which is a meaningful improvement. The harder question is whether the hardware itself can survive that long, and what happens when it cannot.
Fairphone’s answer is to make the phone something the owner can genuinely open and fix. Fairphone CTO Chandler Hatton told Ars Technica that the company’s goal is to provide a compelling mobile experience while also enabling users to “fully own” their device. That phrase carries real weight in a market where ownership increasingly means custody rather than control.
The trade-offs are real and worth naming honestly. A phone engineered for disassembly cannot be identical to one engineered purely for thinness, water resistance ratings, or the tactile premium of a seamless glass back. Buyers accustomed to the feel and finish of a Samsung Galaxy or iPhone will notice differences. The question Fairphone is asking is whether those differences matter enough to override the appeal of a device you can actually maintain yourself.
The Broader Industry Problem Fairphone Is Responding To
The timing of Fairphone’s US launch is not accidental. Right-to-repair has moved from a fringe advocacy position to mainstream policy debate across multiple jurisdictions. The European Union has introduced repairability scoring requirements for certain electronics. In the United States, several states have passed or are considering right-to-repair legislation. Consumer sentiment, particularly among younger buyers who are also more likely to think about the environmental cost of electronics, has shifted toward valuing longevity.
At the same time, the major manufacturers have made selective concessions. Apple launched its Self Repair Program in 2022, offering genuine parts and manuals for a limited range of repairs. Samsung has partnered with iFixit. These programmes exist, but they operate within frameworks the manufacturers control, covering specific models and specific components on the manufacturers’ terms. Fairphone’s proposition is structurally different because repairability is the design constraint, not an afterthought bolted onto a device conceived for other priorities.
The ethical sourcing dimension adds another layer. Fairphone has built its brand around supply chain transparency, including efforts to trace minerals like tin, tungsten, gold, and cobalt to sources that meet higher labour and environmental standards. This is genuinely difficult work, and Fairphone has been more forthcoming about its progress and its failures than most consumer electronics companies. That credibility matters to the segment of buyers for whom the device’s origin is part of the purchase decision.
What This Means for Buyers in Malaysia and Singapore
Fairphone does not currently have official distribution in Malaysia or Singapore, and the Gen 6+ launch is focused on the US and European markets. But the questions the device raises are directly relevant to consumers here. Both markets have sophisticated smartphone user bases, high device replacement rates, and growing awareness of electronics waste as a policy and environmental issue.
Singapore’s National Environment Agency has been expanding e-waste collection infrastructure under the Extended Producer Responsibility framework that took effect in 2021, placing obligations on producers and retailers to manage end-of-life electronics. Malaysia has its own e-waste regulations under the Environmental Quality Act. In both contexts, a device designed to last longer and be repaired rather than replaced fits neatly into the direction regulators are pushing, even if Fairphone itself is not yet present in those markets.
For consumers who do import the Gen 6+ or who are watching this space, the $650 price point is competitive with mid-range flagships from Samsung and Google. The value calculation is different, though. You are not paying for the fastest processor or the most sophisticated camera system. You are paying for a device that its maker believes you should still be using, and still be able to repair, in eight or ten years.
Why the Fairphone Model Matters Beyond Fairphone
The Gen 6+ will not outsell the Galaxy S25 or the iPhone 16. That is not the relevant metric. What matters is whether a device built around repairability and ethical sourcing can be commercially viable at scale, because if it can, it creates pressure on larger manufacturers to move further than their current voluntary repair programmes require.
The smartphone industry has spent fifteen years optimising for thinness, performance, and the kind of finish that photographs well in unboxing videos. Fairphone is betting that a meaningful and growing segment of buyers wants something different, specifically a device they genuinely own, can genuinely fix, and can use for long enough that the environmental and financial cost of production is spread across a decade rather than two years. If that bet pays off in the US market, the conversation about what a smartphone should be will become harder for the rest of the industry to ignore.
