It takes something visually dramatic to cut through the noise of a natural disaster, and a 30-foot crater swallowing a Hollywood actor’s driveway qualifies. But the sinkhole that opened up outside a Malibu home reportedly belonging to Nicolas Cage this week is more than a celebrity footnote. It is a vivid illustration of what happens when ageing coastal infrastructure meets the compounding force of a warming climate.
The collapse began modestly enough. Nearby residents said they were told on Monday that an 8-foot sinkhole had started forming beneath the driveway. According to one resident quoted by Los Angeles magazine, initial reactions were calm: “We thought it could be fixed pretty quickly.” Then, in the early hours of Tuesday morning, the ground gave way entirely, leaving a crater estimated at 30 feet by 30 feet, roughly 9.1 metres on each side. Broken asphalt, concrete and construction debris were left inside the hole. Emergency services responded after the structural failure triggered a gas leak, which SoCalGas later confirmed had been secured.
When a Tropical Storm Does Not Need to Make Landfall to Cause Damage
The timing of the collapse is directly tied to Tropical Storm Marie, which had previously been classified as a hurricane before weakening as it tracked offshore. The storm never made landfall in Southern California, yet it delivered enough rain and high surf to push the coast past a critical threshold. A coastal flooding warning had already been issued for the Los Angeles area when the ground beneath the Cage property gave way.
AFP reported that waves could be seen lapping inside the crater and rushing back out beneath the stanchions supporting the home itself, a detail that underscores how exposed the structure had become. The Pacific was, in effect, reclaiming ground. This is the increasingly common reality for Malibu, a stretch of coastline that has always been geologically restless but is now facing more frequent and more intense weather events layered on top of infrastructure that was never designed for them.
Five Homes Condemned, a Road Impassable
The damage at the Cage property was severe, but it was not isolated. Malibu City officials declared at least five homes on the same street unsafe for entry following the collapse. Emergency access to the area was described as “severely constrained,” with officials warning that the road “may be impassable due to the large portion of the road that has collapsed.” Traffic cones now ring the crater, and the surrounding neighbourhood is effectively cut off from normal movement.
Cage purchased the Malibu home in 2024, according to a report in the New York Times published shortly after the sale. His representatives had not responded to a request for comment from BBC News at the time of reporting. The actor, who won an Academy Award for his performance in Leaving Las Vegas and has built one of Hollywood’s more eclectic filmographies across titles including Face/Off, Con Air and The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, is not the story here. The property is simply the most recognisable address on a street that is now a case study in coastal vulnerability.
