There is a version of the internet that most people under 30 have never experienced, one where finding a webpage felt less like a query and more like a treasure hunt with unreliable maps. Before Google collapsed the entire act of web navigation into a single white box, the question of how humans would organise and discover digital information was genuinely unsettled. The answer, it turned out, was plural, chaotic, and in retrospect, surprisingly interesting.
A piece by Ars Technica revisiting the pre-Google web serves as a useful reminder that the dominance of any single platform is never inevitable. It is always the outcome of specific choices, specific failures, and specific moments when one approach simply outcompeted the rest. Understanding what search looked like before Google won tells us something important about what the web could still become.
When Engines Competed on Personality, Not Just Precision
By the mid-1990s, the web was expanding faster than any single organisation could catalogue it, and a cluster of search engines rose to meet that chaos on their own terms. AltaVista, Lycos, Excite, HotBot, and Ask Jeeves each brought a distinct philosophy to the problem. AltaVista leaned into raw indexing power and gave users Boolean operators that rewarded the technically literate. Lycos prioritised breadth. Excite tried to layer editorial personality over its results. Ask Jeeves wagered that users wanted to type natural language questions rather than keywords, which was either visionary or premature depending on how generously you read the timeline.
None of them were simply inferior versions of what Google would later build. They were products of a different set of assumptions about what the web was and who was using it. Ranking algorithms were fragile and easily gamed. Crawling the web comprehensively was still closer to an art than an engineering discipline. And crucially, no one had yet decided that search should be the primary interface through which a person encounters the internet.
Directories, Bookmarks and the Human Layer That Has Since Disappeared
Perhaps the most striking difference between the pre-Google web and today’s version is that machine indexing was only one tool among several. Yahoo built its early reputation not as a search engine in the modern sense but as a human-curated directory, a categorised list of sites that editors had reviewed and organised. Users also navigated through newsgroups, email signatures, and the simple act of following links from one site to another, because the web was still compact enough that human organisation could hold its own against automated crawling.
This blended ecosystem of curation and accident produced a different kind of discovery. You might find a webpage because someone mentioned it in a mailing list, or because a site you trusted had linked to it, or because you stumbled through a Yahoo subcategory and found something unexpected. The experience rewarded exploration in a way that a single ranked results page does not. It also meant that the web felt, at least partially, like something communities were building together rather than something an algorithm was sorting for you.
That human layer has not entirely vanished. Social media recommendations, newsletter links, and word-of-mouth sharing still drive significant traffic. But they operate in the shadow of search dominance rather than alongside it as genuine equals.
What the Consolidation Actually Cost
Google’s rise from 1998 onward was not simply a story of a better product winning on merit, though PageRank’s insight that links represented editorial endorsements was genuinely transformative. It was also a story of consolidation around a single interface and a single company’s judgement about what constitutes a relevant result. The diversity of approaches that characterised the mid-1990s search landscape collapsed into one dominant paradigm, and the web reorganised itself around that paradigm’s incentives.
For users in Malaysia, Singapore, and across Southeast Asia, that consolidation arrived alongside the region’s own rapid internet expansion in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Many users in this region never experienced the pre-Google web in any meaningful way. Their first encounter with the internet was already a Google-shaped one, which makes the current debates about search monopoly, algorithmic transparency, and the dominance of AI-generated results feel somewhat abstract. The alternative was never part of their digital memory.
That context matters now because regulators in the United States and Europe are actively interrogating whether Google’s search dominance constitutes an illegal monopoly, and because AI assistants from Google, Microsoft, and others are beginning to replace the traditional results page with synthesised answers. The question of what search should look like is open again in a way it has not been for two decades.
Why the Memory of Messy Search Still Matters
Nostalgia for AltaVista or Ask Jeeves is not really the point. Most of those engines had serious limitations, and the web in 1996 was a fraction of the size and utility it has since become. The point is that the pre-Google era demonstrates something the current moment tends to obscure, which is that the architecture of information discovery is a choice, not a natural law.
The web was once organised through a mix of machine indexing, human curation, community links, and editorial directories. It could, in principle, be organised differently again. As AI reshapes how results are generated and presented, and as antitrust pressure mounts on the platforms that currently control discovery, the decisions being made right now about what replaces the Google-era paradigm will shape how billions of people encounter information for the next generation. The pre-Google web did not have better answers. But it had more of them, and that variety was itself a kind of resilience the current internet has largely traded away.
